Taking inspiration from their own home decor as well as weddings featured in Rock n Roll Bride magazine and a shared love of horror movies, Jodie and Matthew were determined to create a day to remember. Planned through various lockdowns, their day was an opportunity for friends and family to reunite.

“We loved hearing the excitement around our wedding as it was going to be the first big gathering since the start of COVID, which meant there were people we hadn’t been able to see in ages. There was a buzz around the big day for over a year and seeing everyone’s faces light up when they could see what we had planned, watch us get married, and be able to have fun surrounded by friends and family was such a beautiful thing to witness.”

Emotions ran high throughout the day, with tears and laughter throughout the ceremony, and an accidental recreation of a slasher movie involving a cake knife and red icing! (No one was hurt!) Jodie walked down the aisle to Fall Out Boy’s Heaven’s Gate and told us, “Seeing the smile on my dad’s face as he walked me down the aisle was something I will never forget. He was so happy and he looked so proud of me. We had a memorable moment when Matthew’s uncle read to us from a book, The Velveteen Rabbit. It made us laugh, but there were definitely tears in the room, especially the photographer!”

Their decor included ornate skulls, floating candles, flowers and butterflies, with Jodie doing much of the design and creation herself. She dried petals to make confetti, made flower hoops, a mailbox, all stationery and more! She told us, “It was so special to see the vision we both had for our wedding gradually come to life. At first it was a little overwhelming because we knew what we wanted, but we didn’t know. how to do this on a small budget. However, we were able to source and manufacture items and get them for much less than hiring a company.

Jodie and Matthew incorporated a lot of what they loved into their day and advised future couples, “It’s a day for both of you, so let your ideas flow!” Do plenty of research before trusting someone you’ve never met to design or plan your wedding! Also, remember that Pinterest can be an amazing source of ideas, but you can also fall down the rabbit hole and get overwhelmed. Choose a theme, add your personal touch and stick to it.
